Quality Initiatives

We promote an integrative approach and maintain infrastructures that drive a high level of quality and patient safety.

Our ongoing commitment to excellence is demonstrated in physician expertise, the highest standards of patient-centered care along with achieving and maintaining Joint Commission Accreditation. This commitment to excellence places Sparrow Eaton Hospital as one of only two Critical Access Hospitals in Michigan that made the "Top 100" Critical Access Hospital list out of 1,300 in the nation, as recognized by the National Rural Health Association.

Because we believe that people can make better decisions about their health care if they have accurate information, we have made a commitment to reporting publicly how Sparrow Eaton Hospital ranks on a range of quality standards and benchmarks.

Awards and Recognition:

• Participation with the Joint Commission on National Patient Safety Goals: Patient safety goals have been adopted to improve patient safety in the hospital, lab and home care.

• Participation in MHA’s Keystone Surgery Collaborative: Recognizing safe opioid use, handling of  specimens and briefings before and after surgery.

• Participation in the Joint Commission's Quality Check and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Hospital Compare: Quality guides to health care organizations in the United States. The Hospital Compare web site – www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare – contains the most comprehensive information available on commonly reported quality measures.

The hospital’s Quality Strategic Plan of “Safe, Effective, Well Prepared, For You” was developed in 2010 by Sparrow Eaton Hospital's executive team and Board of Trustees, with input from physicians and employees. Projects were chosen based on best practice and high reliability organization practices.

Quality goals include:

  • Achieve inpatient HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Systems and Providers) Overall Rating and the Overall
Quality of Care score at or above the 75th percentile.
  • Have zero preventable events that could harm a patient.
  • Achieve 100 percent compliance with handoff communication: SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, & Recommendations).
  • Increase Culture of Safety score to 78 percent – best in class.
  • Increase screening exams to 80 percent.
  • Increase HEDIS (Healthcare Effectiveness Data Information Sets) scores to at least 93 percent. HEDIS measures were developed from evidence-based standards of care to both prevent chronic diseases and monitor patients with conditions such as diabetes.
  • Have zero preventable HAIs (Hospital Acquired Infections).
  • Reduce inappropriate transfers by 10%.
  • Meet all core measures for Critical Access Hospitals at 100%.

We encourage you to use multiple sources when researching hospital quality, and to speak with your doctor to help you and your family or loved ones make informed decisions about your health care provider.
